Oct. 26 Class

Today was a work period for you to ask questions and to study.  Here are some details about what to expect on the test.

Unit Test Details

Very similar in format to the previous test in length.

When a quadratic function is in vertex form, be able to…
  - Find the vertex.
  - Equation of the axis of symmetry.
  - Maximum or minimum value.
  - Domain and Range.
  - Number of zeroes.
  - Expand to standard form.

When a quadratic function is in standard form, be able to…
  - Re-write it in vertex form (completing the square).
  - Determine the number of zeroes.
  - Solve using the quadratic formula.

Solve word problems involving quadratic functions.
  - Identify the variables.
  - Determine what values needed to be solved for.  (Vertex or zeroes?)
  - Pick a strategy (quadratic formula, completing the square?)

Determine the equation of a given graph in vertex form.

Determine an equation of a graph from data and use it to predict values.

Here's some brief notes on determining the number of zeroes:

Oct. 24 Class

After a bit of answering questions from previous days, I discussed how to write quadratic equations from a graph of data.  The process is very similar to what we did in the last unit, only this time we started from vertex form rather than factored form.

Here are the notes:

Homework: Complete the handout, p. 250 #3-5, 7-10, 12

This essentially covers the material for the test on Monday!  Now all we have left is review and test preparation.

Tuesday, 23 October 2012

Oct. 23 Class

Today I handed back the formative quiz and went over the solutions.  Here are the solutions:

Then we started discussing word problems.  Here is the handout:

Handout: Solving word problems

And here are the full solutions.

In addition to the questions on the back of the handout, there are some textbook questions to try:

Today we did a formative quiz.  I will return them to you on Tuesday.

We then discussed the nature of roots in quadratic equations.  Here are the notes:

Oct. 18 Class

Learning Goals: Understand how to use the quadratic formula.

Today I introduced where the quadratic formula came from.  Have a look at this handout to see how it is derived,

Handout: The quadratic formula

We also watched a youtube video that might help you remember the formula:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=43JvqjHtFXQ

Here are the solutions to the examples on the back of that handout:

Homework: p. 222 #3, 5, 6, 8-10

Announcement: We will do a formative quiz tomorrow!

Wednesday, 17 October 2012

Oct. 17 Class

Learning Goals: Be able to complete the square.

Today I went over how to complete the square.  This is an essential skill that you must memorize!

Handout: Completing the square

Here are the examples, one straight forward and one more difficult.

Homework: p. 213 #1cd, 2, 4, 5, 8, 9, 11, 12

Tuesday, 16 October 2012

Oct. 16 Class

Learning Goals: Review the information that can extracted from the vertex form fo quadratic functions.

Today we began a new unit that will involve the vertex form.  You must remember how to find the vertex, axis of symmetry, direction of opening, maximum or minimum and the domain and range from a function in vertex form.

You should also know how to sketch the function and how to rewrite it in standard from by expanding.

Here are the examples from today:

Homework: p. 203 #1, 3-5, 7, 8, 10, 11, 14

Monday, 15 October 2012

Oct. 15 Class

Congratulations on completing the third Unit Test today!

We will begin with the new unit tomorrow: STANDARD AND VERTEX FORMS

Friday, 12 October 2012

Oct. 12 Class

Test Preparations

Be able to find the
  -  zeros
  -  y-intercept
  -  axis of symmetry
  -  vertex
of a quadratic function that is in standard form or factored form.

Ex.  3x^2 – 9x – 30

Be able to write an equation (factored and standard form) from a graph or scatter plot (ie. plot data.)

Solve quadratic equations by factoring.
  - find x, (usually two answers ;) )

Solve word problems:
- Profit type questions
- Population type questions
- Projectile type questions (anything that flies through the air.)

For word problems:
-  Look for vertex to find maximum or minimum.
-  Substitute and solve to find a specific variable.
(what time, how high, what speed… find x or y.)

Domain and Range

Communication: explain a procedure.

Homework:
p. 182 #1, 5-7, 9, 11
p. 184 #1-4, 6, 10
Mid-Chapter Review p. 155 #1-8

Thursday, 11 October 2012

Oct. 11 Class

Learning Goals: Be able to write a quadratic equation that represent data.

Today we discussed how we can take data from a real life situation and turn it into a quadratic equation.  First we plotted points from a table of values and then filled in a line of best fit.  Once we get the zeros from the line of best fit, we can write down and equation in factored form.  Using another point from the graph, we can then calculate the a value.

Handout: Creating quadratic models from data

Here are the notes:

When we substitute a point into the equation to solve for a, we can choose any point.  In this case we chose (0, 20).

In this graph, only points near the axis were given, so we had to extend it to estimate what the zeros might be.
Homework: p. 176 #1-4, 11, 12

Wednesday, 10 October 2012

Oct. 10 Class

Today we discussed more on roots, intercepts and zeroes.  Remember FZERGI!

Functions have Zeros
Equations have Roots
Graphs have Intercepts

We worked through this handout today: Quadratic Equations and Functions

The homework contains a bunch of word problems, which will be a major part of this unit.  Be sure to try them all and be warned that some of them require graphing to solve and others can be solved by factoring.  Those are two methods you should become increasingly familiar with.

Homework: Complete handout, p. 168 #1-9, 11, 12

Tuesday, 9 October 2012

Oct. 9 Class

Learning Goals: Understand how to solve quadratic equations by factoring.

At this point you should all be really good at factoring!  We will be using factoring to solve problems.  I did a few examples in class today using this handout:
